11/11/2023 0 Comments Beach house thank your lucky stars rarSonically, Beach House have produced something raw and a bit dirty, which is interesting when contrasted with the soaring, clean, ringing fare of Bloom and DC. Most songs don’t have much in the way of a cohesive or straightforward narrative, opting instead to paint a murky watercolor of places and feelings without any of the sharply defined lines of story. This tonal shift is most evident in the lyrical content of the record - verses are short, terse, and gesture toward some stormier feelings than Depression Cherry or Bloom. Thank Your Lucky Stars is a dark album, darker than anything Beach House has done with Sub Pop. So, everything that follows is my best shot at an unfiltered view of Beach House’s newest new album. I struggled to clear my mind of clear my mind of all this so that I could take an objective, honest look at Thank Your Lucky Stars that wasn’t colored by all these emotions I was feeling about the record’s release time and my mild disappointment with Depression Cherry. You can imagine my frustration when I sat down to write this review. It isn’t at all bad, and it isn’t bad thing for a band to have a certain style, but hearing too much at once can kind of kill the illusion. But have too much of it at once, and you start to realize how… samesy it all really sounds. When experienced once every two years or so, it’s easy to appreciate how good it is. They have an absolutely immaculate sound, one that they’ve really refined over the course of the last decade, and it’s one that a lot of bands have tried and failed to capture. But why did I feel this way? More music is better, right? I actually felt a little underwhelmed, and that made me feel disappointed. Depression Cherry left me slightly burnt out on sweeping arpeggios and cathedral echos, and I still felt like I needed some time to recover. I’ve never liked double albums all that much - Sgt Pepper was much better than The White Album - and I wasn’t sure what to expect from a new Beach House full length released so soon. And, truth be told, I didn’t really feel all that excited to listen to it. Then I get on Spotify and, lo and behold, TLYS was staring at me. A whole new album! A full-length LP! When my friend (EmPress contributor Mateo Vargas) told me that Beach House had dropped a new album, I actually considered mocking him for being so behind the times because DC was old news. Then, barely two months after the release of Depression Cherry, Beach House drops this bombshell on us. My Beach House cravings were sufficiently satiated for another couple of years. And it was alright, not great or anything, certainly no Teen Dream, but I enjoyed it anyway. I loved Teen Dream, I REALLY loved Bloom, and I waited in giddy anticipation for two years while I waited for their new record, Depression Cherry. He even knocks off 25% percent because of all the hassle Still I won't believe it until I finally have it in my hands. The release of this album was kind of a weird experience for me. Guess what: He found ONE Loser Edition that I can pick up today. And after I had a Sub Pop and Bella Union copy of "DC" and found out that I very much preferred the former (even my girlfriend noticed the difference in the sleeve's texture ) I was 100% positive that I didn't want a European "Lucky Stars".īut I have just received an email from the boss of the store that send me the three "wrong" copies, apparently he found out where the mistake was, had "a word" with the person responsible for confusing the different pressings and personally looked through all US copies of "Lucky Stars" they had in stock. Especially since it turned out that it wouldn't really have been neccessary to order "DC"'s Loser Edition from the States.īTW: The fact that Europe has it's own version doesn't mean the more ambitious shops and mailorders won't import the US pressing as well. Since I wasn't exactely taken with that album I definitely didn't feel like buying another one so quick when "Thank Your Lucky Stars" was announced. I ordered "DC" directly from Sub Pop long before Bella Union announced their EU color version.
